This year’s cherry blossom flowering is expected to be around the average timing in western Japan, slightly earlier than average in eastern Japan, and earlier than average in many parts of northern Japan.
This winter, cold air masses arrived repeatedly, but they did not persist for long, and there were also periods of notably high temperatures. As a result, dormancy breaking is expected to have been somewhat weaker than average in many areas, with this tendency becoming more pronounced toward the west.
Although temperatures have been low in late January and early February, temperatures from then through March are forecast to be higher than average, with March expected to be warmer farther east. Consequently, flowering is likely to be around average in western Japan and slightly earlier than average in many areas of eastern Japan.
In northern Japan, temperatures are forecast to remain higher than average through April, so earlier-than-usual flowering is expected; however, at present, it does not appear likely to be as markedly early as has been seen in many recent years.
